Designing for the future we want

Data Respons subsidiary, IT Sonix, held their third Usability Day in Leipzig on November 14. The 2019 theme was Designing for the Future we want, addressing how usability design can help in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals. Data Respons was Gold Sponsor of the event where 200 participants joined us in sharing and exploring ideas, insights and knowledge on the role design can have in developing a more sustainable society.

The IT Sonix Usability Day is growing larger every year and is attracting students and engineers from the whole region. – This day is useful for connecting with the UX community and create a platform for learning, sharing and exploring ideas, says Dr. Andreas Lassmann, Managing Director of IT Sonix in Leipzig.

Can design push us to make better choices?

“Everyone has told us to put the user at the center of our work, but not everything that is comfortable for the individual is healthy for us as a society. Will the way we interact with machines in the future change the way we treat other people? What can we do to promote behaviour from people that is beneficial for the society?” Andrè Gehrman asked these questions during his talk on Society Centered Design. Mr. Gerhman then explained how we can change our actions if the design is centered around how it can benefit society rather than how it will make life easier for the user, yet keeping our choices open. He then went on telling us about the “Keymoment” keyholder that disrupt you when trying to use the keys for the car, motivating you to use the keys to the bike instead. By making it slightly uncomfortable making the car, it is hoped that more people will use the more sustainable option…

The day was organized by the UX design team at IT Sonix and Data Respons were gold sponsors. From the left: Dr. Andreas Lassmann (Managing Director, IT Sonix), Romina Nickl (UX designer IT Sonix), Sebastian Eidem (CCO, Data Respons) and Christoph Specht (project manager, XPURE).

About the World Usability Day

The World Usability Day was established back in 2005 by Usability Professionals Association (now UXPA) established to promote the values of usability, usability engineering and user centric design. WUD is single day of events occurring around the world that brings together communities of professional, industrial, educational, citizen, and government groups for our common objective: to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use.  This year’s WUD theme was “Design for the Future We Want”. The theme is inspired by the United Nation’s (UN’s) Sustainable Development Goals for the future. Usability professionals have to design responsibly ensuring the digital world is available for all, and that it is created with the environment in mind.

– At Data Respons we believe in enabling sustainability through technologyRight usability design is the key to get the most out of technology and the products we use in our daily lives. We support this initiative as it encourages making the right choices when developing the solutions of tomorrow, says Kenneth Ragnvaldsen, CEO of Data Respons ASA.
